Compact country, real transfer choices

Getting around Slovenia by train, bus and car

Public transport works best when your bases sit on the main corridors and your itinerary has time. A car helps with mountain flexibility and cross-country combinations, but creates parking and traffic costs.

The smart choice is often mixed: rail or bus for the long arrival, walking locally, then a car only for the segment that genuinely needs it.

What each option is genuinely good at

City and main corridors

Train

Comfortable for selected international and domestic corridors, but station names and final connections matter for lakes and mountain resorts.

Bus

Often the more direct public option for Ljubljana to Bled, Bohinj or Kranjska Gora, with seasonal changes requiring a current search. Since 24 August 2026, Ljubljana’s main bus station has operated from a temporary location on Masarykova cesta, east of the railway station. Allow extra transfer time and check the departure platform before travelling.

Car

Strong for multi-base routes and trail access, balanced by alpine traffic, parking rules and the burden of moving it every day.

Walking and cycling

Once based well, walking or cycling often improves lake, valley and coast days more than another short drive.

Build every transfer

The four checks that prevent bad travel days

  1. Search door to door

A station or stop may still need a local bus, taxi or luggage walk. Include the final kilometre.

  2. Check the return first

For day trips and one-way walks, the final service is more important than the first outward option.

  3. Add the seasonal layer

Mountain roads, boats, shuttles and resort services can change the route completely.

  4. Reconfirm close to travel

Use operator or official destination information for the actual date, especially after an itinerary change.
